TORO WOMEN’S INTERPROVINCIAL: TOP FOUR FOUND AT WHAKATANE - 09 December 2011

Friday 9th December
Favourites on paper at the start of the week have translated into the final four teams at the Toro Women’s Interprovincial tournament at the Whakatane Golf Club.

Defending champions North Harbour booked their place as the top team in Division One when they defeated Wellington 4 - 1 to be the only undefeated team in that group with hosts Bay of Plenty joining them in the final four.

Harbour will face Waikato in one semifinal tomorrow in what is a repeat of the 2010 Toro Women’s Final which North Harbour won 3 1/2 -  1 1/2.

“It is good we are playing North Harbour because we know what to expect,” said the 20-year-old Waikato number one Emily Perry.

“We’ll prepare this afternoon and be ready for them.”

Perry, who has worked hard on the mental side of the game and became the first woman to win three Charles Tour titles in a row, enjoyed halving with Cecilia Cho today.

She has liked seeing where her game is at and looks forward to another test in Ko tomorrow.

“It’s good to benchmark myself again against them. I haven’t played them in the past few months so it is nice to see how my game has improved, I have definitely come a long way.”

Auckland’s number one Cecilia Cho, who is planning to turn professional in March, is hoping to leave the Blue and White colours on a high.

“I feel like we are ready to win,” said the 17-year-old World Number Two amateur.

“We have gone through unbeaten which is a good record and we have good depth in our team. All of our six players are really strong and that helps.

“I hope that I get to play Lydia in the final tomorrow that would be really cool.

“I am looking at going pro maybe in March so this is my last chance to win this title. I remember the feeling when we won [2009] and I want to feel that again.”

Cho is expecting a tough reception from the locals as they look to knock out Bay of Plenty.

“Every time they hit a good shot I think they will go crazy and cheer and anytime we hit a good shot nothing…just quiet but that is ok.”

For Zoe Brake, who has played more golf at this tournament than she has all year, it was a mixture of excitement and relief to qualify for the semifinals.

“It’s so awesome for this group of girls to come through and perform well at home,” said the 20-year-old.

“We had a few issues at the start of the week with team-members pulling out with injury but we have rallied really well. There is a bit of pressure on us to perform well at our home club and everyone wants to beat us but so far we have done well.”

Brake has a good record at the Toro Interprovincials. She made a clutch putt from 15m in 2006 to force the final to sudden death with Canterbury where the Bay won the title on the first extra hole.

“We still talk about that putt, that was a great feeling.”

Her match with Lydia Ko yesterday had a similar sort of feel and she thrives on that atmosphere.

“I love playing under pressure. It seems to bring the best out in me. I enjoyed the match with Lydia yesterday we had six holes that were halved with birdies so it was fun golf. I hope that it’s like that tomorrow. It would be amazing
to win the Interprovincials on my home course. I put my wins in this tournament up there with anything I have done in golf but that would be even better.”

Wellington, who finished on eight points and 17 individual wins, and Hawkes Bay eight points and 15 individual wins, were the two unlucky teams to miss the playoffs for the trophy as they finished third in their respective divisions.

The form four teams have progressed to the semifinals of the Toro Women’s Interprovincials with all four capable of winning the trophy.
