Is a self-propelled (Personal Pace) mower necessary for large properties?
For large properties, a self-propelled mower with Personal Pace® technology can significantly reduce the effort required to maintain your lawn, especially on uneven or sloped terrain. While push mowers require more physical effort, a self-propelled mower drives itself forward, allowing the user to guide it with minimal input.
This feature is particularly beneficial for larger areas, as it reduces fatigue and makes mowing more efficient.
Toro’s Personal Pace® Technology enhances this further by automatically adjusting to your walking speed. The system senses your pace and matches the mower’s speed accordingly, providing a more natural, comfortable mowing experience without the need to manually control speed settings.
For very large properties, a zero-turn mower may be a more suitable option, offering increased speed and manoeuvrability. For steep or challenging slopes, specialised equipment such as Grillo climbers can provide safer and more effective mowing performance.
How can mulching improve my lawn’s soil and reduce water usage?
Mulched grass clippings improve soil structure by adding organic matter, which enhances the soil’s water absorption by up to 12%. This means less water is needed to keep your lawn healthy, making mulching a great choice in areas with water restrictions. Toro mowers with Vortex Technology increase airflow to the deck, ensuring clippings decompose quickly and effectively.
How does mulching help control weeds?
Mulching with Toro’s Recycler® Technology creates a natural barrier that helps prevent weed seeds from reaching the soil, reducing the chances of weed growth. Regular mulching also promotes thicker, healthier grass, which can outcompete weeds, further minimizing their spread.
NOTE: If your lawn already has large sections of weeds, mulching could inadvertently spread weed seeds. In such cases, it’s better to bag the clippings to avoid spreading those weeds to other areas. Once the weeds are under control, you can return to mulching to promote a healthier lawn.
Can Toro mowers mow in wet conditions?
Toro Lawn Mowers can operate in wet conditions, but mowing wet grass is generally not recommended. Wet clippings tend to clump rather than disperse evenly, which can clog mower decks and discharge chutes and leave unsightly patches on the lawn.
For better performance in damp conditions, mulching without the catcher fitted is preferred over bagging, as bagging systems can block more easily. Models like the Toro TimeMaster® with side discharge are also a good option, as they help manage heavier, wet clippings more effectively.
For the best results and lawn health, it’s always recommended to mow when the grass is dry.
Wet mowing can also increase the risk of spreading lawn diseases, as clippings can carry and distribute fungal spores across the turf.
For best results, mulch when the grass is dry and remove only one-third of the grass blade at a time to avoid damaging your lawn.
How do I get the best quality of cut?
To obtain the best quality of cut:
Set the cutting height on the front wheels one notch lower than the rear wheels. (For example, set the front wheels at 2 inches and the rear wheels at 2 3/8 inches.)
Make sure the blade is sharp (for best results, replace or sharpen yearly or when needed).
Operate the machine at full throttle.
Cut only 1/3 of the grass blade at a time.
Mow only dry grass or leaves.
If the finished lawn appearance is unsatisfactory, try one or more of the following:
Walk at slower pace while mowing.
Raise the cutting height on your mower.
Cut the grass more frequently
Overlap the cutting strips instead of cutting a full swath with each pass.
Alternate mowing direction to keep the grass standing straight – this helps disperse clippings, which enhances decomposition and fertilization.
Clean the clippings and dirt from the underside of the mower after each use. (Grass build up inside the mower will affect cutting quality.)
