Keeping your reel mower cutting perfectly with a grind schedule

A reel mower lives and dies by how sharp it is. This is the part that catches out anyone new to fine turf: you can buy the best greens mower made, and if the reel and bedknife are not sharp and well set, it will tear the grass instead of cutting it and undo everything else you do. A sharp, correctly set cutting unit gives a clean cut and a healthy, true green. A dull one browns the tips, stresses the plant and leaves the surface looking ragged from close up. Why sharpness matters so much

The reel and bedknife work exactly like a pair of scissors, and blunt scissors tear rather than cut. On grass, a torn leaf tip browns off within a day or two, which is why a green cut with a dull reel looks off-colour and scruffy even when everything else is right. Worse, that tearing stresses the plant and opens it up to disease. On greens, where you are presenting the finest turf on the whole course at the lowest height, the state of the cutting edge is the difference between a true, healthy surface and a tired one. It really is that direct, and it is why good greenkeepers treat reel sharpness as non-negotiable.

Backlapping vs grinding

There are two ways to keep an edge, and you need both. Backlapping is the light touch-up: running an abrasive paste between the reel and bedknife to keep a good edge keen between grinds, quick enough to do regularly. Grinding is the periodic reset, machining the reel and bedknife back to true when backlapping is no longer enough to restore a clean cut. The rhythm is simple in principle: backlap often, grind occasionally. A dedicated reel grinder makes the grinding accurate and repeatable, which matters because a reel ground unevenly will never cut cleanly no matter how often you touch it up.

A simple grind and maintenance rhythm

You do not need a complicated system, just a consistent one. Daily, check the cut and the height and clean the machine down after use. Through the season, backlap regularly to keep the edge keen. Periodically, when the cut starts to drop off, grind the reel and bedknife back to true. And seasonally, give the machine a full service and setup before the busy months. The common mistakes are the mirror image of that: leaving a reel too long between grinds, running the wrong reel-to-bedknife contact, and skipping the daily checks, each of which shows up on the green fast.
