The difference between a course that fights its greens all year and one that quietly presents them well usually comes down to a single idea: aeration is a programme, not a panic. The courses that struggle tend to aerate reactively, when the greens are already sealed up and slow, which means the disruptive work always seems to land at the worst possible time. The courses that get it right have decided in advance what happens each season, so the greens are opened up steadily and the big jobs fall where the turf can handle them. Spring and autumn: the main events

The backbone of any programme is the major hollow-tine work, and in New Zealand that belongs in spring and autumn. The logic is simple: hollow tining pulls cores and leaves the surface disrupted, so you want it done when the turf is growing strongly enough to knit back within a couple of weeks. Spring aeration sets the greens up for the playing season ahead, opening the profile and clearing the thatch that built up over winter. Autumn aeration relieves the compaction that the busy summer has pressed in and prepares the greens to come through winter without sitting wet. Pair each with topdressing and you are steadily building a firmer, better-draining profile year on year. The one rule that never bends is to keep these jobs well clear of your competition calendar, because nothing sours members faster than cored greens on the morning of a big event.

Through the season: keeping it open

Between those two set pieces, the job is maintenance, and that is where solid tining comes into its own. Because it fractures the soil without lifting a core, it causes little disruption and lets you keep the profile open and draining through the busy months without taking greens out of play. A light solid tine every few weeks through summer does far more good than one heroic effort a year, and it keeps water moving when heat and traffic are both working against you. This is also the season for the little-and-often thinking that separates good greenkeeping from firefighting: small, frequent interventions that the golfers barely notice, rather than dramatic ones they resent.

Deep tining and the longer cycle

Not everything runs on a seasonal loop. Deep compaction builds over years, well below the reach of your regular tines, and it needs its own answer. On heavy or clay soils under constant play, an annual pass with a deep-tine machine like the Toro ProCore SR75, working down to around 40 cm (16 in), keeps the deeper profile from sealing up and quietly protects your drainage. Slot it into a quieter part of the year, and treat it as insurance rather than routine. If you are not sure whether your greens need it, the tell is simple: if water still will not move after your normal surface work, the compaction has gone deeper than surface tines can reach.

Matching machines to the plan

A programme is only as good as the machines behind it, but the good news is that you do not need many.
