Robotic vs ride-on mowers: what’s right for your course?
Robotic and ride-on mowers solve the same problem from opposite directions. A robot cuts little and often, on its own, on defined areas, trading speed for autonomy. A ride-on cuts a lot quickly with an operator who can read the ground and adapt on the fly, trading autonomy for control and finish. Neither wins outright, and most sites that adopt robotics end up running both. The useful question is not which is better, but which does which job on your course.
Parkland has supplied turf and golf equipment to New Zealand courses since 1988. If you would rather talk it through, call the team on 0800 807 333.

How each one works
A robotic mower runs a schedule inside a set boundary, cutting a small amount each pass and mulching the clippings back into the turf, quietly and without an operator. A ride-on covers ground fast in a single session, with a person handling contours, obstacles and whatever the day throws up. The robot’s strength is that it never gets tired and never needs a driver; its limit is that it works within fixed boundaries at a steady height. The ride-on’s strength is judgement and finish; its cost is the operator’s time. Once you see it as autonomy versus control, the rest of the decision follows.
Where robotic wins
On defined open areas kept at a steady height, autonomous machines are hard to argue with. A Turf Pro on a rough, a surround or a sports field frees your crew, keeps the surface consistently tidy, and runs quietly around the clock, including the early mornings and weekends when you would otherwise be paying penalty rates or simply not mowing. A slope-capable model like the Turf Pro 500S extends that onto ground a ride-on operator would rather avoid. For big, repetitive, well-bounded areas, this is a genuine labour saving, not a novelty.

Where a ride-on still earns its place
For a fine finish, detailed work, big one-off cuts and areas that change week to week, a ride-on with a skilled operator is still the right tool and will be for a long time. Presentation surfaces, anything needing a human eye, and jobs where the boundary or the grass is different every time all stay with the crew. A robot asked to do that work will disappoint, just as a ride-on asked to mow the same rough every night is a waste of a skilled operator. The two are complementary, not competing.

Which is right for your course?
For most sites the answer is to use robots to take repetitive mowing off the defined areas that suit them, and keep ride-ons for presentation and the jobs that need a person. Adding robotic mowing to the right areas usually beats trying to swap out the ride-on fleet wholesale.
